Kids’ Minds Matter was founded in 2016 when a group of concerned volunteers noticed a lack of resources for children struggling with mental and behavioral health issues. Led by co-founders Susan Goldy and Scott Spiezle, the group aims to raise awareness for the estimated 46,000 children in Southwest Florida who are currently living with these invisible illnesses and do not have adequate support services. Funds raised through their annual Secret Garden Gala will assist children and families with mental health and behavioral disorders in our community, enable them to receive the proper diagnosis, the necessary treatment, and the resources to hopefully live successful and productive lives.
Providing sustainable behavioral healthcare for local children will require ongoing support from our community.
“In the next 12 months, 36,000 children in Southwest Florida will have a diagnosable behavioral health illness and would benefit from pediatric psychiatric or psychological counseling,” says Susan Goldy. “24,000 of those children are from families who are either on Medicaid or are uninsured. Florida Medicaid provides little, if any, reimbursement to healthcare providers for pediatric behavioral healthcare. So even if professional help were available, without philanthropy and the commitment of Golisano Children’s Hospital to provide care, 24,000 children in our community in just this year would not be able to afford the care that could change their lives for the better.”
